DJ Woofer’s Amazing Music Fact For Today!

On this day in 1964, Herman’s Hermits hit the No.1 spot in the UK with their version of “I’m Into Something Good”

Formed in 1963 in Manchester, the classic lineup included:

Peter Noone, Lead vocals (and former Coronation Street actor!) Keith Hopwood, Rhythm guitar, vocals. Karl Green, Bass, vocals.

Derek Leckenby, Lead guitar. Barry Whitwam, Drums.

Their name came from a pub-goer who thought Noone resembled Sherman from Rocky and Bullwinkle. “Sherman” became “Herman,” and the rest is pop history!

The song was written by the legendary American songwriting duo Gerry Goffin and Carole King, originally recorded by Earl-Jean McCrea (of The Cookies) earlier that same year. But it was Herman’s Hermits’ cheeky charm that turned it into a British Invasion classic!

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Yorkshire Fact For Today!

The Battle of Flamborough Head, fought on 23 September 1779, was a dramatic naval clash off the coast of Yorkshire during the American Revolutionary War.

John Paul Jones, a Scottish-born captain fighting for the American Continental Navy, led a Franco-American squadron sailing under the American flag but largely crewed and supplied by the French. His flagship was the Bonhomme Richard, a converted merchant vessel gifted by France and named after Benjamin Franklin’s pen name.

The British convoy was protected by two Royal Navy ships:• HMS Serapis (a powerful 44-gun frigate) and the Countess of Scarborough (a smaller escort vessel) Around 6:00 PM, Jones approached the convoy near Flamborough Head. When hailed by Captain Richard Pearson of Serapis, Jones famously replied:“I have not yet begun to fight!” The battle erupted in the fading light. Bonhomme Richard was outgunned and badly damaged, but Jones refused to surrender. At one point, his ship was on fire and sinking, yet he managed to lash it to Serapis and continue the fight hand-to-hand.

After a brutal exchange, Jones captured Serapis. His own ship, Bonhomme Richard, sank shortly after the battle, but Jones transferred his crew to the captured vessel.

The merchant convoy escaped, but the battle became a legendary moment in naval history.

On this day in 1974 Carl Douglas hit the No.1 spot with “Kung Fu Fighting” This disco-infused novelty track topped the UK Singles Chart and went on to dominate charts in 12 countries. A true one-hit wonder with serious staying power!

Written and performed by Carl Douglas, a Jamaican-British singer, and produced by Biddu, an Indian-born British producer.

It was originally meant to be a B-side to a more conventional ballad, I Want to Give You My Everything. With only 10 minutes of studio time left, they recorded Kung Fu Fighting in two takes, complete with exaggerated “huhs” and “hahs” for comic effect. The label flipped the single, Kung Fu Fighting became the A side, and the rest is disco history!

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Yorkshire Fact For Today!

On this day in 1066, The Battle of Fulford, Yorkshire!

Just outside York, Harald Hardrada of Norway defeated the Saxon Earls Edwin and Morcar.

This was the warm-up act for the Battle of Stamford Bridge and ultimately Hastings, setting the stage for the Norman Conquest.

Fulford’s muddy fields saw Viking ambition clash with Saxon pride.

If Bat Woofer had only arrived at the scene earlier!

On this day in 1978, Queen’s “Bicycle Race” Video was filmed at Wimbledon Greyhound Stadium!

Freddie and the boys rented the stadium not for dogs, but for 65 nude models on bicycles! The finished video was banned in several countries, but it became legendary for its boldness and humour! The song features a bicycle bell solo, which fans loved so much they started bringing bells to Queen concerts. It was released as a double A-side with Fat Bottomed Girls, and the two songs even reference each other. Pure Queen magic!

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Fact For Today!

The Birth of First and Second Class Post!

On 16 September 1968, Royal Mail introduced the First and Second Class system, replacing the older categories like “letters” and “printed papers.” It was the first time in the world that a national postal service formally split mail into speed-based classes.

First Class: Aimed to deliver next working day across most of the UK. No weight limit.

Prioritized in sorting and transport.

Second Class: Cheaper, but slower—originally targeted for delivery by the second working day, later relaxed to third working day from 1976.

Had a weight limit: 1½ lb pre-1975, then 750g after metrication.

Often held back while First Class mail was processed.

In 1968, The price of a First Class stamp was 5d. (5 old pennies!) and Second Class was 4d.

Now I’m going to chase myself down the garden path, and do lots of barking!

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Music Fact For Today!

On this day in 1978, Boney M. topped the UK Albums Chart with Nightflight to Venus, featuring “Rivers of Babylon” and “Rasputin”, a double helping of Disco delight! I had the 12in. single and the B side of “Rivers of Babylon” was “Brown Girl in the Ring” Boney M. hardly ever performed live, as their sound was a lot of studio wizardry, and they lip synced to pre recorded tracks! Frank Farian, the mastermind, created Boney M in 1974 and sang most of the male vocals himself, while Bobby Farrell danced and mimed on stage! The name Boney M was inspired by an Australian TV detective series called Boney. Farian liked the sound and added the “M” for extra flair.

The best-selling physical single in the modern chart era is without doubt, "Candle in the Wind 1997" / "Something About the Way You Look Tonight" by Elton John. This double A-side tribute to Diana, Princess of Wales, sold approximately 33 million copies worldwide, making it the best-selling single since the 1950’s when the modern charts began.

5th September 2025

There really should be a National Baggy Trousers Day on September 5th! Today celebrates 40 years since one of my favourite ever singles was released! I can remember buying it and then playing it over and over again!

“Oh what fun we had…” — and on 5 September 1980, Madness unleashed Baggy Trousers, a ska-pop anthem that turned schoolyard mischief into chart-topping magic.

Lifted from their second album Absolutely, the track shot to #3 in the UK charts, where it loitered for a cheeky 20 weeks, like a prefect-dodging lad with a Walkman full of brass riffs. While Pink Floyd brooded over education’s dark side, Suggs scribbled lyrics on a mate’s floor, celebrating the chaos, camaraderie, and cracked blackboards of British school life.

It wasn’t just a song — it was a playground revolution in three minutes flat, that changed music for me forever!

2nd September 2025

Today is officially the last Back to School Day after the Summer Hollibobs!

“School Days” by Chuck Berry is a cornerstone of early rock ’n’ roll, and it gave him his first Uk charts hit, reaching the dizzy heights of No. 24 in 1957! Also known as: “School Day (Ring! Ring! Goes the Bell)”

It paints a vivid picture of 1950s high school life, bells ringing, teachers droning, and students dreaming of jukeboxes and dance halls. It’s a classic! ending with the iconic line:

“Hail, hail rock and roll! Deliver me from the days of old.”

Today is National Red Wine Day, and maybe National Burger Day, but the internet has more than one date for this, so my Amazing Music Facts go in 2 different directions!

“Red, Red Wine” became a hit for UB40 in 1983, but it was originally written and recorded by Neil Diamond in 1967 and was more of a ballad. Tony Tribe gave it the reggae twist in 1969, and it became Trojan Records first chart hit, reaching No.46 in the Uk charts! UB40 initially thought that this was the original version!

As for burgers, if it is indeed National Burger Day, The Fast Food Rockers “Fast Food Song” which name dropped Pizza Hut, McDonald’s, and KFC made it to the No.2 spot in June 2003.

27th August 2025

On this day in 1964, The Honeycombs hit No.1 in the Uk charts with their debut single “Have I the Right?” Produced by Joe Meek, it was a stomping beat-pop anthem.

The Honeycombs, were a North London band with a twist: their drummer was Anne “Honey” Lantree, a hairdresser turned percussionist. That detail inspired the name of the band.

Joe Meek had the band stamp their feet on wooden stairs to create a thunderous rhythm.

Microphones were clipped to banisters with bicycle clips.

A tambourine was smashed directly onto a mic.

The final mix was sped up, giving it a frantic, almost punkish energy.

A 1977 cover by Scottish band The Dead End Kids reached No 6 in the charts.

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Music Fact for today!

26th August is National Dog Day!

One of the most annoying dog related tracks ever, “Just One More Night” was a 1978 one hit wonder by the British-based band Yellow Dog, fronted by American songwriter Kenny Young. It’s essentially a novelty song, telling the story of a woman who keeps pleading to stay “just one more night” with a man, despite his increasingly firm refusals.

The track ends with a comical spoken-word telephone exchange, where she begs to stay and he finally snaps with a resounding “NO!”

25th August 2025

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Music Fact For Today! Today is National Banana Split Day!

The banana split was first created in 1904 by David Evans Strickler, a young pharmacist’s apprentice in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He experimented with soda fountain sundaes and came up with the brilliant idea of splitting a banana lengthwise and layering it with three scoops of ice cream, chocolate syrup, whipped cream, nuts, and a cherry on top. It was such a hit with college students that they happily paid 10 cents, double the price of a regular sundae! (But today is Monday!)

The Banana Splits were also a fictional musical group made up of four costumed animal characters:Fleegle – a beagle who played guitar and led the band.Bingo – a gorilla on drums. Drooper – a lion who handled bass.Snorky – a silent elephant on keyboards and sound effects! Their most memorable single, without a doubt is “The Tra La La Song (One Banana, Two Banana)” which was released in 1968. It was covered by punk band The Dickies in 1979, their version reached number 7 in the Uk Top 40 and was released on yellow banana coloured vinyl! DJ Woofer

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Facts For Today!

Today is National Waffle Day!

In 1393, the first known waffle recipe appeared in Le Ménagier de Paris, a medieval French cookbook. It included flour, eggs, salt, and wine—but no leavening agent. By the 15th–16th Century, waffle irons became rectangular and grid-patterned, giving us the familiar shape. By the 1500s, waffles were depicted in art and enjoyed across the Low Countries!

Today is also William Wilberforce Day, on what would have been his 265th Birthday! So, given that waffles already existed in his lifetime, it is possible that he would maybe have enjoyed a birthday waffle occasionally!

As for my favourite thing, sausages, they have been around in our lives for at least 4000 years! Anyway, I’ll try to stop waffling on now, as I haven’t had my own breakfast yet!

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Music Fact For Today!

One that is special to me today! Apparently when I was a pup, this was the first song that I ever sang along to on the radio! On this day in 1963, The Beatles released “She Loves You” in the UK! One of their most explosive singles, it became the best-selling single of all time in Britain until 1977. That “Yeah, yeah, yeah” hook? Pure Beatles magic!
And which single took over as the best ever selling single in 1977?
Paul McCartney and Wings, Mull of Kintyre!

22nd August 2025

The 2025 Air Guitar World Championships lit up Oulu, Finland from August 20–22 with a riot of invisible riffs, theatrical flair, and global camaraderie. Thirteen nations sent their finest fretless performers to battle for the coveted Flying Finn trophy, including the UK’s Paul Burnell—aka James Bond Double Air Seven—whose spy-themed mashup rocked the stage with cinematic swagger. The event kicked off with “Airientation Day,” welcoming newcomers and veterans alike, and culminated in a finale that championed the competition’s ethos: Make Air, Not War. It’s not just a contest—it’s a peace-promoting spectacle where charisma counts more than chords. Air guitar is easier than real guitar for me, as hairy paws and strings is really difficult!

Can’t stop to keep Rockin’ Kid!

DJ Woofer’s Amazing Music Fact!

Third Finger, Left Hand by Martha and the Vandellas first appeared in the UK charts in March 1967 as the B-side to Jimmy Mack, which peaked at No. 21 and spent 9 weeks on the chart. The song had a bit of a second life, thanks to its popularity, it was re-promoted in 1970 and again in 1975, though it didn’t chart separately from Jimmy Mack during those reissues. The Pearls also released a cover version in 1972, which became a UK hit in its own right, reaching No.31 in the singles chart. Played at every engagement party and wedding in the 1970’s!

20th August 2025

On this day in 1977, Brotherhood of Man Hit Number 1 with “Angelo” This was their second UK chart-topper, as In 1976, they won the Eurovision Song Contest with “Save Your Kisses for Me”, a deceptively sweet tune with a twist ending. The song sold over 6 million copies, hit Number 1 in 33 countries, and remains one of Eurovision’s biggest-selling singles ever!

Following on from that, in 1978 “Figaro” , a cheeky tale of a Spanish waiter with romantic ambitions gave them their third No. 1.

19th August 2025

DJ Woofers Amazing Music Fact!

The best-selling UK single of 1975 was “Bye Bye Baby” by the Bay City Rollers. Originally recorded by The Four Seasons in 1965, the Bay City Rollers gave it a glam-pop makeover. It spent six weeks at Number 1 on the UK Singles Chart. It sold over a million copies, making it the runaway chart topper of the year!
Hard to believe that 1975 and the Bay City Rollers happened half a century ago!
