Solar Car Port

Leisure centres across the East Riding, including Bridlington are set to benefit from a major green energy upgrade this spring, as solar canopies are installed in car parks at sites.

The council is also rolling out the technology at Carnaby. These solar carports will generate clean electricity while providing sheltered parking, helping to cut both costs and carbon emissions.

The £900,000 scheme includes battery storage and is expected to deliver 435kWp of solar generation across all sites. £350,000 of funding has been awarded by Great British Energy, through the Hull and East Yorkshire Combined Authority.
Once operational, the canopies are forecast to produce over 430,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year—saving the council around £100,000 annually on energy bills and reducing carbon emissions by 426 tonnes over the next 25 years.

During installation, some car park areas will be temporarily closed. Leisure centre members and visitors will be notified in advance, and all works are expected to be completed by April.

Councillor Paul West, cabinet member for environment and transport, said:

“This is a fantastic scheme to reduce our carbon footprint in an innovative way and use our existing council-owned facilities, that will also bring down our long–term operating costs.”
