Humberside Police are reminding residents about the laws surrounding electric scooters after receiving several complaints about their use in the area.

Officers say privately owned e‑scooters remain illegal to ride on public roads, pavements and in places accessible to the public, such as supermarket car parks. They can only be used on private land with the landowner’s permission.

Because e‑scooters are classed as motor vehicles, riders would legally require a licence, tax, MOT and insurance—requirements that currently cannot be met for privately owned scooters.

Police warn they have a range of powers to deal with illegal or unsafe use, from issuing warnings to seizing scooters and pursuing prosecutions. This includes cases where an e‑scooter is ridden carelessly, dangerously or in an anti‑social manner. If a scooter is seized, it cannot be returned, and riders may face fines and penalty points on their licence.

Officers say the reminder aims to keep both riders and the wider community safe.
