East Riding of Yorkshire Council’s trading standards team is reminding families to put safety first when buying children’s toys this festive season.

With household budgets under pressure, many parents are turning to online marketplaces for cheaper options.

However, the council warns that counterfeit or unsafe toys are still being sold and could pose serious risks to children.

Key Safety checks for parents and carers:

- Look for CE or UKCA marks – these must be permanent, easy to see, and displayed on the toy or its packaging. They confirm the product meets strict UK safety standards.

- Check the seller’s details – third-party sellers must provide a UK name and contact address both online and on the product. This ensures traceability and compliance.

- Inspect on arrival – confirm the toy carries the CE or UKCA mark and includes UK contact details for the manufacturer or importer. If in doubt, return it through the official online returns process.

- Examine the toy before use – watch out for sharp edges, detachable small parts (a choking hazard for under-threes), loose cords, unsecured batteries, or poor-quality finishes.

- Follow age guidance – always check suitability warnings and make sure instructions are in English.

Second-hand toys

While used toys don’t need the same labelling as new ones, they must still meet safety requirements under the General Product Safety Regulations 2005. Ideally, choose toys that still carry CE or UKCA markings and are in good condition.

Councillor Lyn Healing, cabinet member for communities and public protection, said:“Our priority is the well-being of East Riding residents, especially children enjoying their new gifts. While most toys sold on the high street or online are safe, dangerous toys continue to reach unsuspecting consumers. By taking a few extra moments to check for the proper markings and obvious faults, families can help ensure a safer Christmas.”
