A Bridlington woman has admitted causing the deaths of two people and seriously injuring a young child through careless driving.

Laila Barnard-Wigley, 27, of Thorseby Avenue, Bridlington, appeared at Hull Crown Court on Tuesday 25 November 2025, where she pleaded guilty to two counts of death by careless driving.

The charges relate to a collision on Friday 7 May 2021, when emergency services were called to the A165 at the junction of Grindale Road, Bridlington at around 3.30pm.

- A black Mercedes GLA, driven by Barnard-Wigley, collided with a red Peugeot 2008.

- The Peugeot’s driver, a 33‑year‑old man, and his front seat passenger, a 32‑year‑old woman, tragically died at the scene.

- A two‑year‑old boy travelling in the Peugeot sustained serious injuries but survived after hospital treatment.- Barnard-Wigley, then aged 23, also suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

An investigation by Humberside Police’s Serious Collisions Unit found Barnard-Wigley had been driving carelessly on rural roads affected by heavy rain.

Police Sergeant Rob Mazingham, who led the investigation, said:

“This was a truly tragic incident that left a little boy orphaned and devastated families who continue to grieve. Every fatal collision we attend is a tragedy that didn’t need to happen. Behind every incident is a person – a parent, partner, child, sibling, or friend – and in almost every case it could have been prevented.”

He added:

“The driver responsible has to live with the consequences for the rest of their life, and I am pleased to see Barnard-Wigley being held accountable. She will be sentenced in January.”

Police continue to urge the public to report dangerous driving via 101, or 999 in an emergency, and to submit video evidence through the Op Snap online tool.
