Bridlington is mourning the loss of a truly cherished figure this week, as tributes continue to pour in for Deputy Mayor and well‑respected Town Councillor Ray Pollard, who sadly passed away in his sleep on Sunday 18th January 2026.

Ray served as a Bridlington Town Councillor from 2023 to 2026 and was elected Deputy Mayor in May 2025 — an honour he accepted with deep gratitude and humility. Supported by his long‑term partner Doreen as Deputy Mayoress, Ray approached the role with the same warmth, dedication, and sincerity that defined every part of his life.

Born in Bradford on 18th March 1946, Ray moved to Bridlington to raise his family with his beloved late wife Margaret. Many will remember him as a patient and encouraging driving instructor, guiding countless local people onto the roads. His working life also included time with Ernest Brigham’s and F. Kneeshaw, before he later devoted himself to the community as a Civil Celebrant — a role that perfectly reflected his compassion and care for others.

Ray’s love for Bridlington Old Town was well known. When he was elected to represent the Old Town ward in 2023, it meant the world to him. He was a familiar face at local groups and events, always ready with a smile, a story, or a helping hand.

And of course, no tribute to Ray would be complete without mentioning Bridlington Town FC. The Seasiders were never far from conversation when Ray was around. His support, enthusiasm, and loyalty to the club spanned so many years. He was with the team only the day before he passed, cheering them on as passionately as ever, and had even been planning to travel to Tuesday night’s away game. His presence at the club — and the warmth he brought with him — will be deeply missed.

Ray was a gentleman in every sense: humble, well‑liked, and endlessly committed to making a difference. He never took for granted the trust placed in him by local residents, and he worked tirelessly to serve the town he loved.

His passing at 79 — just weeks before what would have been his 80th birthday — is a great loss to Bridlington. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, Doreen, and all who knew and loved him.
