Bella’s Bonfire Night Ordeal Sparks Debate on Tradition

Sunday 16th November 2025

By Bridlington Gold Radio Editor

As fireworks lit up Bridlington’s skies this Bonfire Night, the familiar crackle and bang brought joy to many — but also distress to others. While families gathered with sparklers and hot chocolate, local residents raised concerns about the impact on animals, both pets and wildlife.

For centuries, Bonfire Night has marked the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators tried — and failed — to blow up the Houses of Parliament. What began as a celebration of survival has evolved into a night of fireworks and bonfires across the country. Yet in 2025, some question whether the tradition has lost its meaning, or even become harmful.

Like most years, the celebrations in Bridlington didn’t just last one night — fireworks continued for almost two weeks. For pet owners, that extended noise meant prolonged stress and disruption. Cats hid for hours, horses bolted in fields, and dogs trembled at home night after night.

- As one local historian explained: “The original message was about loyalty to the crown. Today, it’s more about family fun. But the noise can be overwhelming for animals.”

One case struck a chord with the community: Bella, a black Labrador, bolted from her home on Bonfire Night after being terrified by the sound of fireworks. Her family launched a desperate search, with appeals on social media. Days later, Bella was found safe — but injured.

In a recent Facebook update, Bella’s owner Richard shared a mix of relief and concern: “Yesterday was a rollercoaster. Good news is that the fracture in her pelvis doesn’t need an operation and will be on bed rest for 4–5 weeks.” However, Bella still requires surgery to repair a cruciate ligament once her pelvis heals.

Her recovery then took a worrying turn when vets discovered badly bruised lungs, likely from an impact, leaving her restless and sedated. Richard wrote: “She has been restless and panting all day… Let’s see what tomorrow brings.”

But in the latest update, there is finally good news. Bella remains on methadone, though now at longer intervals, and it is working well for her. She has walked fully on her back legs and even wagged her tail — a remarkable improvement in just 24 hours. Richard added: “What a difference in 24hrs Huge thank you to the 780 friends/family who have donated to her long recovery.

Animal welfare groups continue to urge residents to consider quieter celebrations, or to attend organised displays where safety and timing are better managed. Fire services also remind people that fireworks can pose risks not only to humans but to pets and wildlife.

Despite the debate, Bonfire Night remains one of Bridlington’s busiest community events. For many, it’s about warmth, togetherness, and lighting up the autumn darkness. But Bella’s ordeal — set against two weeks of fireworks — has sparked fresh calls to rethink how we celebrate.
